Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Route Areas.

The Annapurna Sanctuary is a high glacial basin lying 40 km directly north of Pokhara. This oval-shaped
plateau sits at an altitude of over 4001 meters, and is surrounded by a ring of mountains, the
Annapurna range, most of which are over 7002 meters. With the only entrance a narrow valley between
the peaks of Hiunchuli and Machapuchare (Fistails), where run-off from glaciers drains into Modi Khola
River, the Sanctuary was not penetrated by outsiders until 1957. Because of high mountains on all sides,
the Annapurna Sanctuary receives only 6-7 hours of sunlight a day at the height of summer. The unique
combination of heights and depths on the 6-7 day trek into the Annapurna Sanctuary give rise to an
extraordinary variety of ecosystems. The south-facing slopes are covered in dense tropical jungles of
rhododendron and bamboo, while the north-facing slopes, in the rain shadow, have a drier colder
climate similar to that of the near-by Tibetan Plateau.

Route of Annapurna Trekking and belongs to Upper Mustang Trekking.
Upper Mustang trek is located beyond the great Himalayan range in the western part of Nepal. Many
foreigners who come to Nepal for trekking would want to include upper mustang in their itinerary as it
provides them with the opportunity to peek at the ancient Buddhist and Tibetan culture that is still

prevalent in the region. The major attractions of the upper Mustang treks are undoubtedly the ancient
monasteries, some of which were built thousands of years ago, and the replete caves that lie scattered
in the region. The culture at upper Mustang is a beautiful amalgamation of Tibetan and Buddhist
traditions. In the past, it was an independent state with a separate King ruling the region. LoManthang is
still considered as the Kingdom of upper Mustang. Foreign visitors have been allowed to the region since
1991, but tourism to Upper Mustang is regulated. Foreigners need to obtain a special permit to enter,
costing US$50 per day per person. Most tourists travel by foot over largely the same trade route used in
the 15th century. Over a thousand western trekkers now visit each year, with over 2,001 in 2008. August
and October are the peak visiting months. On August 27, 2010, local youth leaders in Mustang
threatened to bar tourists beginning October 1, 2010 due to the refusal of the Nepalese government to
provide any of the $50 per day fee to the local economy. Visitation, however, continued uninterrupted
beyond that date.
